Nastatten
The close surrounding from Nastatten (about 14 km south west of the 563-katt castle hotel Taunus) between Rhine river and Lahn
river is also called Blaues Landchen ("blue land"). The indication points to the
fact that the blue dyeing was at home in this region. Before the dyeing with chemical
dyestuffs came into being, they used Farberwaid, a local plant for
the production of natural colors. The museum of local history in Naststatten dedicates
itself to handcraft in agriculture and the house work of the women

("Nassauische Kleinbahn"), a meter track railway, that connected Nastatten with
the Rhine river in the 1950s.

In Bettendorf (about 13 km south west from the 563-katt
castle hotel Taunus), there's a geological open air museum, where findings of different kinds of rocks and findings
from the mine of the region are exhibited. Numerous wall charts inform
you about the geological varieties of the area between the Rhine
river and the Lahn river, geological connections and rock
appearance. In the center of the collection there is a rock
block of silicified corals which weighs
about 500 kilograms. A mineral collection also belongs to the open air museum.
Fairy tale forest (Marchenwald) Burgschwalbach
The fairy tale forest in Burgschwalbach (about 9 km east from the 563-katt castle hotel Taunus) presents a special

From the history of the castle in the Taunus mountains
The castle in the Taunus mountains has it origins in a medieval
castle. It was the family seat of the counts from Katzenelnbogen, a noble knight's gender,
which stood loyally on the side of the Hohenstaufern as well as the Habsburgern through 4
centuries.
As
reeve of the convent Prum in the Eifel mountains, the noble Dieter I came to St. Goar on
the Rhine river. His son Heinrich I built the castle in the Taunus mountains in the years
1094 to 1096 as reeve of the convent Bleidenstadt. As castle lord he was first mentioned
in the year 1102.
The count gender was known for its munificence. The famous minstrel
Walther from the Vogelweide vaunted this with the words:
I stand true to the count,
even without gifts, without money.
The noble stone, the diamond,
was given to me through the nicest knight's hand.
The count Philipp the Elderly
died in the year 1479 as last of his gender. His first marriage ended without male
descendants. That's why he decided for a second marriage at the age of 71 years. But in
order to do so, he had to get rid of the countess. The
castle chaplain was hired for the assassination of her by poisoned mass wine. The fight of the heritage of
the countess from Katzenelnbogen was topped in 1540 through a fire desaster, which
almost completely destroyed the castle in the Taunus mountains. Finally, the land counts from Hesse, who also had other castles in Hesse,
could accept an inheritance. Until the begin of the 19th century, the castle in the Taunus
mountains was in their ownership.
A new building, the so-called "Lepensche Haus" (present castle), replaced the
old site from 1584 on. In the 18th century it experienced a reformation.
After the second World War, the castle in
the Taunus mountains was first used as a children's home, before it was changed to a
restaurant company with the possibility to stay overnight.
Today the castle in the Taunus mountains crowns on a wide rock plateau. It
is surrounded by the contemplative town. There are only some parts
of the wall remaining from the medieval castle as well as the late gothic
gate tower with a hipped roof. The ridge turret stems from 1881.

The present building is a simple, three-floor residential
building, whose upper floor is presented in half-timbered style.
It almost comes across as a skyscraper on the mountain cone above the town.

There's an octagonal bay with a pavilion roof in one
corner of the castle hotel, which belongs to the tower room (Lady's room no. 3). The
picture shows the view from the bay towards the town and the surroundings in the nature
park Nassau.

Town's portrayal
The castle, which is named after the community in the Taunus
mountains with about 2,000 residents, is seat of the association community and center of
the county of the same name. It belongs to the Rhine-Lahn river district in the nature
park Nassau, which is stamped from the expanded forests, slopes and valleys. In the streets, which lead around the castle rock there are a couple of well
preserved half-timbered houses. The museum of local history is
also worth visiting. Besides the places of interest, the
town and the surroundings also offers a lot of possibilities for relaxation and
recreational activities.
Town history
The town was, just like the castle, originally in ownership of the convent of
Bleidenstadt. It's not exactly known where the town's name stems from. The most likely
explanation ist that both parts of the word indicate a town at a creek bend.
In 1138 the town noblemen were upraised
into the countship. They were of great importance for the territorial politics and the
castle construction in the middle Rhine river area. The gender
could call a total of 16 castles its own. The most impressive witness for this is castle
Rheinfels above St. Goar. With its foundation in the year 1245 the gender
became less important. The town in the Taunus mountains became its municipal
laws in the year 1312. From 1326 to 1350 it temporarily belonged to
Nassau. In the Thirty-Year-War, almost the whole town became victim of the
destructiveness of the Bavarian troops.
From 1816 on, the dukes from Nassau governed over
the town in the Taunus mountains for 50 years. The town lost its municipal laws during
this time. In 1866 it came under prussian administration. This phase meant a time of boom.
This boom was limited through both World Wars. Today, the
town is a market town.
Sightseeings in the association
community in the Taunus mountains
The convent Arnstein, the convent ruins Barbach, the castle
Hohlenfels, the Roman fort in the forest near Holzhausen, as well as several chapels
belong among others to the sightseeings in the association
community.
